What are You Rushing Towards?
Instead of rushing through life and the holidays, why not just take a breath and slow down? After all, do we really need Christmas in July?
Before you start your travels with me, here’s your road map:
My mom, dad and I used to live in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where I was born and raised. Somehow my parents ended up on every wanted poster and cancellation list in the state, so this past January we made our Great Escape. Now we live in Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley. We just moved out of the off-the-grid bunker we were squatting in, into our new home – a little brick ranch with a ground hog named Bernie and enough stray cats for a Broadway show. Or rockabilly album.
While in NJ we spent about nine years at non-profit radio station. After our show got cancelled we moved it to the internet, but it’s on hiatus since we’re still unpacking boxes and can’t find our microphones. If you were on my email list and listened to us before, you know this already. And you know where to tune in to listen to reruns.
When my dad visits his family he goes to The Land of Pies and Apple Dumplings. There are rainbows, baby goats, and civilized conversation. When my mom heads up north to see her clan, she takes me along to The Land of Cabbage. It’s full of spotted lanternflies, barrels of Cabbage Hooch, and plenty of arguments. That place is a wealth of inspiration.
Finally, my dad likes to eat beans and exercise (not at the same time). My mom likes to complain about, well, anything (especially the beans), and we have a cat who regularly tries to kill me.
