Talk about small wins.
This will be my seventh post this month. Seven. Count them.
The last time I tried to write a lot? I only made it to three in a month.
Why? Because my mom dropped the ball.
Let me explain.
This whole blogging thing is a team effort. You see, my mom will get a “brilliant” idea. She’ll overthink it, torment herself about it for a while, and moan about “being cancelled” if it’s too controversial.
You know the type.
All thought and no action.
And I’m the one stuck making it happen. Here’s the way it usually goes.
She gets inspired to write something she imagines will be profound. She’ll roll it around in her head for hours until she’s ready to put pen to paper – or fingers to the keyboard. Struggling, she’ll sit up late into the evening – a pencil in her hand and a glass of Creativity Juice next to her laptop.
Eventually she dozes off.
That’s when I log in and help her out. I clean up whatever she’s been working on, give it some personality and perspective, save it, and go to sleep.
The next morning, she looks at the document and says to my dad, “Oh, you just have to read this. I sat up late last night and finally had a brainstorm. Tell me if you think it’s brilliant or what!”
Grrrrr.
My mom has absolutely no clue that a Little Blog Fairy does indeed live in our house . . .
So what does this mean for you?
Here are a few tips for the next time you need to produce some particularly profound prose:
- Schedule your time and sit down in a real chair and write. Like it’s a job or a hair appointment, not something you do during the commercials of whatever it is you’re in the middle of binge-watching.
- Skip the Creativity Juice. You’re really not channeling Ernest Hemmingway, and the chance that it’ll put you to sleep is greater than the probability that it’ll make you brilliant.
- Forget the whole “they’re going to cancel me” thing. You need to have followers before you get popular enough to be unfollowed.
Okay, I’m done. After sitting up all night and cleaning up this post, it’s time for some kibble and a nap.
Oh, and if you need a Little Blog Fairy to give your emails, posts, or website content some personality – or just get it all done – give me a call.
Thanks for reading!
Right on, Little Blog Fairy. You got it. I might give you a call next challenge.
Polly –
You and your mom might check out the book, ‘The Life and Things of Archie and Mehetibel’ – Archie is a newspaper man – and a cockroach! Those are some fun columns….
7 posts is nearly 2 each week – and more sustainable for sure! I can relate to most of those challenges – good tips.
I do keep a list, and jot down ideas to consider…
Hope to see you both again in April!
